The Star Rover by Jack London

The Star Rover, written by Jack London and published in 1914, is a science-fiction book. It is about a prisoner named Darrell Standing, who was a former university professor, in San Quentin prison for killing his colleague. In the book, we learn that San Quentin imposes brutal punishments to the prisoners in solitary confinement like straitjacket. When it is squeezed too much, it can cause some bones to break and some internal organs to be damaged. Many prisoners cannot stay in it even for 10 minutes but Standing stays in this jacket for days. The story is getting interesting when Standing escapes the horror of prison life and long stretches in the jacket by withdrawing into dreams of past lives and astral travels. He walks among the stars and experiences the lives of other men from Stone Age through medieval Korea, France and American West. It is such a powerful and unique book inspired by the life and imprisonment of Jack London's friend Ed Morrell, who is also a character in the book. In real life, he spent 14 years in California prisons and five of them in solitary confinement. I admire how London used his imagination by designing small details in each story and explaining them with such good transitions. If you are interested in astral travels, meditation or any spiritual content, you probably like it.

In the novel, there is another prisoner named Cecil Winwood who convinces forty other prisoners to join him in a jailbreak. Winwood tells the guards that there will a jailbreak and helps them to capture these forty prisoners when they're ready to escape. Also, Winwood says that there is a supply of dynamite to be used in the jailbreak which is hidden somewhere in the prison and only Darrell Standing knows the location. Even though Standing does not know anything about the jailbreak and dynamite, he finds himself on the receiving end of torture by the guards, including being left in a strait jacket for days. Winwood's plan gives him his freedom and throw forty prisoners and Standing into solitary confinement. Some of these prisoners have lost their mind, some have died of illness.

Thanks to Ed Morrell's advice, Standing starts to escape the pain of the strait-jacket by astral travels to his past lives. He becomes a nobleman who lives in medieval France and goes into a duel with a man in love with the woman he loves, an Englishman in Korea of 1600s who is a trusted friend of the Emperor. When the local political issues gets complicated, the new Emperor exiles him and his Korean wife from the palace but does not let them leave the country. They could not leave the country and receive any help from local population for years. He becomes a young boy of a caravan of pioneers on their way to California. Mormons attacks them when they have crossed Utah. We later learn that it refers to Mountain Meadows Massacre which happened in 1857. He becomes a Roman soldier who lives in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus, a man who has to spend years on an outcropping of rock, barely one-half mile square in the middle of ocean. This is my favourite story in the book; he builds a home to protect himself from the waves and storms. He stocks up the food and water near his home and waiting for a ship to save him one day. He has an oar on which he wrote his story. When he comes back to the reality, he learns his oar in the museum he wanted to give. The museum worker says it is in the storage and confirms the story written on it. The worker gets surprised because this information was not open to the public, even himself but says the oar will be public soon.

On the other hand, in real world, Standing is sentenced to death penalty because he causes one of the guards to a nosebleed. Yeah you read right, not because he killed his colleague, it is because of a nosebleed. Anyway...

It is so interesting that Standing has communications with other prisoner like Ed by tapping the plumbing or the wall. He learns how to shut his body down and experience the lives of these other men with this communication. And it is so sad that he tortured for years due to non-existent dynamite.

The strait jacket was actually used at San Quentin at the time. Ed Morrel spent 14 years in California prisons (1894-1908) and five of them in solitary confinement.

Müdür dinamit korkusuyla işkencenin dozunu artırır ve Standing'e deli gömleği giydirmeye başlar. Bu gömlek çok sıkıldığında kemiklere ve iç organlara hayati oranda zarar verebiliyor. Gömlek cezasını alan birçok mahkum da 10 dk bile içinde dayanamadan hayatını kaybeder. Standing kendine boşluklar yaratarak gömlekte hayatta kalmaya çalışır... taa ki artık gücü kalmayana kadar. O sırada duvara vurarak anlaştığı arkadaşlarından Ed Morrell, ona bedenini bilinçsiz bırakıp sadece beynini hayatta tutarak astral yolculuklara nasıl çıkacağını anlatır. Bu sayede gömleğin verdiği acıyı hissetmeden birçok farklı hayatın içinde bulur kendini.

Fransa'da sevdiği kadın için düelloya girerken, 1600lü yılların Kore'sinde çok sevdiği eşiyle imparator tarafından sürgün edilip yıllarca sokaklarda perişan olduğu zamanlarda yaşadıklarıyla, 1857'de Mormon saldırısına uğrayan bir kabilede yaşayan 15-16 yaşlarında genç bir çocukken, Hz. İsa döneminde Roma askeriyken, buzul parçasına çarpıp batan gemiden kurtulan yıllarca bir kayanın üstünde inşa ettiği evinde yaşam mücadelesi verirken görürüz Standing'i. Farklı bedenlerde, farklı isimlerle, farklı hayatlarıyla...

Her kısa hikayede farklı hisler, düşünceler bıraktım ben. En sevdiğim kaya parçasında kurtarılmayı beklerken bir yandan kendi dünyasını inşa ettiği hikaye oldu. Yiyeceğini, suyunu stoklaması; kendisini dalgalardan fırtınalardan koruyacak ev inşa etmesi ve geçen diğer gemilerin dikkatini çekecek uzun bir kaya parçası inşa edip kurtulması çok değişik bir deneyim. Tüm bu yaşadıklarını küreğine not alır ve onu müzeye vermek ister. Gerçek hayata döndüğünde müze çalışanı o küreğin depoda olduğunu ve üzerinde yazılan her şeyin doğru olduğunu söyler. Müze çalışanı bile şaşırır, halka açık olmayan bu bilgiyi nasıl bildiğini merak eder.
