The Life of Sir Lawrence and his painting "A Coign of Vantage"

Lawrence Alma-Tadema was born in Netherlands. When he was a child, he was considered that he would become a lawyer in the future. But he suffered a serious illness at the age of 15 and given a short time to live. That changed his life and he wanted to pursue a life of leisure and pleasure. He decided to turn to art instead of law which was one of his interests. By time, he regained his health and continued to study for art at the Royal Academy of Antwerp in 1852. In 1863, he got married with Marie-Pauline Gressin Dumoulin. Unfortunately, 6 years later, Sir Lawrence lost his wife due to smallpox which made him much more depressive. His health began to fall.
Then, a doctor advised him to travel to England for a medical diagnosis, where he was invited to the house of a fellow painter Ford Madox Brown. In this house, he met his second wife Laura Theresa Epps (Alma-Tadema).
During his life, he spent travelling through Europe and kept producing his masterpieces. He became one of the wealthiest artists of the late 19th century. In 1899, he was knighted. Therefore, he was called “Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema”.
In 1912, he went to Germany to have a treatment for stomach ulcer, and died in Germany at the age of 76. After his death, his works were used as a material source in many Hollywood movies.
He was a representative of Romanticism and Neoclassicism art movement. In his paintings, he used luxurious, decorative and romantic details. And mostly we see that he portrayed the scenes of Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt which were great attraction to Victorian people.
The painting, A Coign of Vantage produced in 1895, combines all of the key characteristics of Alma Tadema's approach such as luxurious and romantic details.
A Coign of Vantage literally means "a favourable position for observation" and in this painting we see that three young aristocratic ladies are looking down at the harbour below by standing on a balcony to watch the ships and people who travel by ships.
The things I love in this beautiful painting are the luxurious clothes they wear, the floral details on their hair and the sculpture, the soft shades of blue in the sea and sky, pastel tone of the other colours, different effects of light and small details like their accessories.

Hollanda'da doğan Lawrence Alma-Tadema, çocukken avukat olacağı düşünüldü. Ancak, 15 yaşında verem hastalığına yakalanmasıyla hayatı tamamen değişti. Doktorlar bile çok yaşamaz gözüyle bakıyordu. Alma-Tadema, bu kısa zamanını avukatlıkla değil de daha çok ilgi alanlarıyla geçirmeye karar verdi ve sanata yöneldi. Sanatla ilgilenmesi, sağlığını iyi yönde etkiledi ve hastalığı yendi. Antwep Royal Akademi'de sanat eğitimine devam etti ve burada birçok ödül de kazandı.
1863'te Marie-Pauline Gressin Dumoulin ile evlendi, ama maalesef altı yıl sonra eşini çiçek hastalığından kaybetti. Eşini kaybetmesi psikolojik olarak Sir Lawrence'ı derinden etkiledi ve sağlığı yine kötüleşmeye başladı. Doktorunun tavsiyesiyle İngiltere'ye tedavi için gitti. İngiltere seyahatinde kendisi gibi ressam olan arkadaşının evindeki davete katıldı ve burada sonradan evleneceği Laura Theresa Alma-Tadema ile tanıştı. Bu arada ilk eşinden iki kızı oldu; Anna Alma-Tadema (ressam) ve Laurence Alma-Tadema (yazar).
Hayatını Avrupa seyahatleriyle geçiren Sir Lawrence, bu gezileriyle şahane eserler çıkarmaya devam etti. 19. yüzyılın en zengin, bilinen ressamlarından biri olmaya başardı. 1899'da şövalye ilan edildi ve "Sir" ünvanını aldı.
1912'de 76 yaşında tedavi için gittiği Almanya'da hayatını kaybetti.
Eserlerinde dekoratif lüks detaylar, romantik etkiler ve Viktorya döneminin ilgi duyulan konuları olan Antik Roma ve Yunan sahnelerini kullanarak büyüleyici işler ortaya çıkarmıştır. Tarzıyla Mikhail Vrubel ve John William Waterhouse gibi birçok sanatçıyı da etkileyen yetenekli bir sanatçıdır.
"Coign of Vantage" eserine bakacak olursak; çiçeklerle süslenmiş, şık giyimli üç kadının balkondan gemileri ve gidip gelen insanları izlediğini görüyoruz.
Mavi sevdalısı biri olarak gökyüzü ve denizde kullanılan ışık ve gölgelendirmelerin hayranı oldum. Renklerin yumuşak, romantik geçişleri; heykelde ve kadınların saçına aksesuar olarak kullandığı çiçek detaylarına bayıldım. Şık kıyafetleri, taşın üstünde eğilerek bakan kadının sandaleti, diğerlerinin bilezik detayları ise çok iyi değil mi?
